For reasons that, to this day, defy all rational attempts to define & explain it, in the early to mid-70's a group of EuroBike nuts coagulated in the small college town of Clemson, South Carolina, home to Clemson University, one of the original Morrell Land Grant Institutions, nestled in the foothills of Upstate, South Carolina hard against the Blue Ridge escarpment in northwestern SC.

Winding Staircase Drag Race

While this is a rather unique story for most people to comprehend, it is part and parcel of the Veltenshine proffered by Clemson Café Racers.

It could well have been a dark and stormy night for all I remember. We had been drinking for a number of hours at Burrells Place. Why do so many of these remembrances dwell on time spent at pool hall type dives? Surely we knew the foolishness of our actions? It was always a gamble to venture up to Burrells of an evening. Morgan had the only roadhouse in the South Carolina mountains, and the surrounding North Carolina mountain counties were dry. You could have a hopping good time at Burrells most any night.

A Burgman tale...

"Today we bring you a story from listener Scott Cloninger. Chris and James, I’m finally catching up on a couple of months’ worth of back episodes of The Pace and while listening to Episode 188 Chris’ Bergman story brought to mind an excellent illustration of the Bergman’s prowess….so here goes: One of the groups I ride with occasionally is a small collection of former Clemson University students from the ’60s and ’70s who call themselves the Clemson Café Racers."

Thanks for letting us know about the Clemson Cafe' Racer's ride this weekend. What a neat bunch of guys. The ride Saturday morning went well. I played tag with Cloner on his 900ss, Rensell on 1999/R1 and Tom (Clemson Cafe Racer) on a Suzuki "Burgman" scooter. No shit, really a scooter...
